Dental expanders, also known as palatal expanders, are orthodontic devices designed to widen the upper jaw, specifically the palate, to address various dental and orthodontic issues. These devices apply controlled pressure to the upper jaw’s sutures, gradually separating and expanding the bones to create more space within the mouth.
The Orthodontist in Zionsville, IN at Village Orthodontics, we offer dental expanders to correct problems such as crowded teeth, crossbites, impacted canines, and speech difficulties. They can lead to a broader smile, improved breathing, enhanced speech, and facilitate other orthodontic treatments by creating space within the mouth, ultimately contributing to better oral health and aesthetics.
Dental expanders gently apply controlled pressure to the upper jaw’s sutures, particularly the mid-palatal suture. This pressure causes the bones of the palate to separate, creating additional space within the mouth gradually.
The expansion process typically involves activating the expander through a keyhole adjustment or turning a screw, either by the orthodontist or the patient. As the bones separate, the surrounding tissues, including the teeth and supporting structures, adapt to the new, wider configuration.
This process allows for correcting orthodontic issues related to a narrow upper jaw, such as crowded teeth, crossbites, and speech difficulties. It can even facilitate other orthodontic treatments by creating necessary space within the oral cavity.
Palatal Expanders
These are fixed orthodontic appliances attached to the upper molars by our dentist in Zionsville, IN. A keyhole adjustment is used to activate the expander by turning a screw. This type is often used in cases of a narrow palate.
Rapid Maxillary Expander (RME)
RMEs are designed for rapid expansion and typically require multiple adjustments per day. They are a more aggressive approach to palatal expansion and are suitable for specific cases that require faster correction.
Removable Expanders
Removable expanders can be taken out by the patient, making them a more flexible option. They are often recommended for milder cases and for patients who prefer the ability to remove the device.
Wider Smile
One of the primary benefits of dental expanders in Zionsville, IN, is that they can create a broader, more aesthetically pleasing smile. They are particularly effective in addressing issues like crowded teeth and misalignments caused by a narrow upper jaw.
Improved Breathing
In cases where a constricted upper jaw may lead to breathing difficulties, dental expanders can help alleviate these problems. By widening the palate, they create more space for airflow, potentially benefiting individuals with issues like sleep apnea or snoring.
Enhanced Speech
A narrow upper jaw can sometimes lead to speech difficulties. Dental expanders can improve articulation and pronunciation by aligning the teeth and bite, enhancing overall communication.
